ASA 4 Blog Post 2 (4/13)

Reading an excerpt of Antonio Gramsci’s writing from The Prison Notebooks opened my eyes to the fact that we are not as free as we think we are. Gramsci was put in prison because those in power did not like what he had to say, in reality Gramsci was not doing anything wrong, he was simply exposing society for what it was, imploring people to open their eyes and realise the scary power possessed by those in high places. Similarly in Michel Foucault’s Truth and Power, Foucault examines the relationship between knowledge and power, specifically examining the concept of ‘truth’. According to Foucault, truth “is produced and transmitted under the control, dominant if not exclusive, of a few great political and economic apparatuses (university, army, writing, media)…” (Foucault 42) Again, this piece of writing further implored me to understand that, we as a society most certainly do not operate under our own free will, there are higher powers that are constantly monitoring us, having us believe what they want us to believe regardless if it’s actually truthful or not.
