April 20 Weapons of the Weak and Race Rebels
Both
readings discuss the acts of resistance, and analyze the ideas and relationship
behind the resistance. In Jame Scottt’s reading, when he talks about the
peasant as a powerless group, he uses examples such as foot dragging, slander
and arson to highlight the facts of political and class struggles. I think that
working classes are struggling with low wage or they are lack of the power to
resistance. Robin Kelly’s reading also related to this topic. In his article,
he talks about his experience of working at McDonald. A huge number of
employees in fast food restaurants such as McDonald are “color” and from poor
family, etc. They get low wages, do a lot of works and still can’t get respect
from customers. Those people, he said, have very little power in the society.
Therefore, they punched time card for each other instead of negotiate or fight
with managers because they don’t have the power to do so. Therefore, they use
their own way to resistance. In our discussion, we discussed that swing manage
try to make their workers working faster and try to minimize acts of
resistance. I think we should consider about the political in our society.
Because of the low social status, working class gets as little as possible
incomes and under some systems to ensure that those employee don’t do any
resistance. Another interesting idea that has pointed out in the discussion is
that the relationship between employee and employers. One classmate pointed out
that if employer treats their employee better, they work more efficient and
happier.
