4/27 James CLR & M. K Gandhi
The
two articles discuss English’s culture of imperialism result in certain
political impact and cultural resistance. CLR James mentions his personal
experience about playing cricket in article Beyond
a Boundary. In West India, students were educated at English school and
played English sports such as cricket. He thinks that English culture plays a
dominant role in West India’s culture and politic through education and sports,
etc instead of India’s culture. I personally can relate to that. Basketball is
one of the most popular sports in China. Parents encourage their children to
play basketball instead of other Chinese sports such as table tennis. Plus,
half of the members of the Chinese basketball team come from Western countries.
When they present China to play basketball with other countries, people would
be confused. The power of the Western culture is huge and it impact in our
culture and social materials and way of thinking. Furthermore, Gandhi also
mentions that India have to resist the Western machines and materialism. He
thinks that people should make some passive resistance to England such as stop
buying their stuffs. I agree with that people are not only getting rid off the economic,
but also need to separate the Western culture from our own culture.
