4/27 Gandhi/James
Both articles presented show off the lives of people under the rule of English colonialism. M.K. Gandhi’s reading was simply more about peaceful protest and resistance against the social and cultural changes British colonies were forcing onto the Indian people. He brings up a lot of ideas on how the Indian people can be free from British rule such as his appeal for India to weave its own cloth and spiritually freeing themselves from machines rather than being slaves. These acts of rebellion are done so against this class exploitation. This can be connected back to Scott’s article where peasants formed their own way of protest that wasn’t violent. Gandhi's ideas of peaceful protest is a symbol of cultural resistance against the British rule from taking over their homeland. Similarly, C.L.R. James’s reading of English colonialism impacting the sport, cricket, and he maes the debate of cultural resistance versus cultural oppression. Oppression in which culture is enforced upon society and resistance in which to go against the current. James goes into depth of how there is oppression against other cultures besides the English culture in cricket in which certain people would gain a lot more power than others based on race. This is also interesting to read because when comparing it to Kelley’s article, they both talk about races being oppressed in which the workers at McDonald's were treated poorly based on their backgrounds.
