4/27 Gandhi/James
In the article regarding
Gandhi’s thoughts on European imperialism, I feel like his notion of “home rule
of India” could be a radical form of asserting everyday forms of resistance. I
understand that by accepting and practicing European culture, they are giving
social, political, and economic power to them. Therefore, by knowing this
culture exists as a power bloc, it makes sense to simply reject European
culture to assert India’s own form of power. I saw this as Indians could have
rejected European food or clothing. In addition, I saw this in James's article
in which he saw West Indian Cricket as a form of cultural resistance. This was
effective as it was an arena where there were individual dynamics used beyond
the traditional game. However, to avoid machinery or technological advances
seems to be difficult to overcome. It does reject European culture and will cost
the colonizer, but I felt this could have oppressed India as well. Education and
health care advances could not have been possible if it were not for
technology. As a result, I appreciate the idea of resisting the dominant
culture even though it must also be followed with critical thought as the
consequences can sometimes go beyond the oppressor.
