4/25 Shah Laotian Daughters

Shah brings up a lot of ideas about political resistance when discussing the article, “Laotian Daughters.” The article focuses on a group of Laotian girls who actively resist against the social enforcements their community is placing on citizens in their community. By being involved in the political affairs of their community, the girls strived to go against the stereotypes that people have placed on Southeast Asians and encourage other people male or female to achieve greatness. The article also tackles the importance of culture and language. I feel like this ties in well with Asian-American communities today. Stereotypically, people see Asians as silent and passive. However, after reading this article we can see that there is a voice. I felt like this article was very inspiring to read because it showed the hardships that people faced in order to have their voice heard. When I see myself as an Asian-American, I think of the culture and background I come from. When I speak the language, people tell me I have a “white accent” which is something I personally developed by living in America my whole life. I am able to maintain some of my culture’s origin, but it has been tweaked for me or in a case “whitewashed.”
