4/25 Monkey Dance
Using small, everyday
acts, these individuals portrayed in the film show the ways in which everyday
actions illustrate cultural resistance and adopt their own understanding of
culture. The overarching example of this can be seen through the “Monkey dance.”
The individuals depict how this dance has been a way for them to not completely
assimilate into the American culture. It allows them to escape the society they
live in and delve into a more traditional aspect of their lives. However, even
through this dance, traditional culture can be malleable as a boy was seen
incorporating a form of hip-hop and break dancing. In addition, a girl who has
passion for this dance and teaches it among her peers finds herself wanting to
talking on the phone with her friends and places great value in finding a
clique at school.
