4/18 Benito M. Vergara Jr. "Betrayal, Class Fantasies, and the Filipino Nation in Daly City"
In Benito M. Vergara Jr.’s article, “Betrayal, Class, Fantasies, and the Filipino Nation in Daly City,” Vergara Jr. was able to provide a lot of insight on the topic of Filipino and Filipino-Americans living in Daly City. Going from discussion of statistics to the culture life of the citizens in Daly City, we are able to see some sort of change in these cultures in a positive and negative light. Vergara Jr. was able to provide enough descriptive information to the point where we can decipher that Daly City is similar to a second home for Filipinos, because of this however, it can be seen negatively as an abandonment of the FIlipino culture and replacing it with American culture. I myself can definitely relate to these ideas because as a first generation Taiwanese-American, I find myself at times taking in the Taiwanese culture at home, while taking in the American culture outside of my home. From there, I create my own culture. Combining these two ideals and cultures to create something that I call my own and what I deem is necessary to help me in today’s society. Vergara Jr.’s ideas also allow me to think of my community in Sacramento where I was mostly raised which has a diverse community compared to my early life in San Jose in a predominantly Asian community.
