4/13 Gramsci&Foucalt
In
Antonion Gramsci’s Cultural Resistance article,
he starts with addressing that philosophy is not belonging to a particular
category of specialists but all man is a philosopher. Then he summaries three
characteristics of philosophers: power of language, common sense and good
sense, and popular religion. I think Gramsci tries to explain how does
philosophy come to be a cultural thing by analyzing the relationship between
philosophy, religion and common sense. I agree with him that philosophy is not
a popular culture because most of the people can’t relate to that. However,
religion is a popular culture because it can connect and reach out to the mass.
However, philosophy needs to become a popular culture and it should make
connection with mass. In Foucalt’s article, he discusses about how does truth
function in the society. In order to understand the truth, we should realize
the power behind the truth. I think this article is trying to find the answer
of what determine the truth and who get the power? How does political power can
determine what is truth? This reminds me what we had read in the DJing article.
African Americans think that hip-pop and DJ belongs to the African American
culture, while Filipinos believe that hip-pop and DJ is a Filipino culture. In
this case, the powers of these two cultures cannot determine the truth.
