4/11 Tiongson

The article “Filipinos Represents” by Antonio Tiongson examines the relationship between contemporary hip-hop culture and Filipino DJs. Tiongson mentions how Filipinos have no cultural marker that differentiates them from another race, thus they rely on authenticating Hip-Hop to express themselves. According to Deeandroid, “hip-hop is part of growing up…it’s definitely part of being in the Filipino culture”(Tiongson 51), which Raymond Williams of “Culture” would agree since he believes that culture is both a way of living and a work of art. In both cases, Hip-Hop was a way of life since Filipinos grew up in its environment, and it is a work of art to them because of the way the contribute to Hip-Hop by adding their own styles and flavor to the music. Another insight drawn from the two authors is that culture can be a mean of resistance control; Hip-Hop was invented to resolve violence in African American districts, which is how Williams described a use of culture to establish social control.
